Graduation Requirements

In order to prepare its students for colleges and careers, the Elk Grove Unified School District has some of the most rigorous graduation requirements in California. The Board of Education believes that students will be better prepared for colleges and careers if they are challenged in high school. The district has increased its graduation requirements several times in the past
15 years, and students have always risen to the challenge.
Whenever the district considers updating its requirements, they are first reviewed
by two committees — one comprised of teachers and administrators,
and one of parents and business leaders. These committees examine what
employers and colleges expect of graduates to ensure that the district’s requirements
prepare students with skills they need to be successful in their post secondary
education and careers. The committees forward their recommendations
to the Board, which makes the final decision.

California High School Exit Exam
In addition to completing other graduation requirements, under state law, each student is required to pass the California High School Exit Exam (CAHSEE) to receive a high school diploma. Students must pass both English and Mathematics sections of the CAHSEE in order to graduate. Each pupil shall take the CAHSEE beginning in 10th grade and may retake the examination twice in 11th and 12th grades. Students may have an opportunity after 12th grade to pass the examination but they must have completed all other graduation requirements. Students who have not yet passed the CAHSEE by the end of 12th-grade are entitled to receive intensive instruction and services for up to two consecutive academic years after completion of 12th-grade or until the student has passed both parts of the CAHSEE, whichever comes first. These services are offered through the Elk Grove Adult and Community Education program. English learners who fail to pass the exam by the end of 12th-grade may also receive assistance with English proficiency as needed based on the results of the diagnostic assessment and previous results on the exam. Disabled students will be required to pass the CAHSEE to receive a diploma. Disabled students may take the exam with those modifications or accommodations that are specified with an IEP or 504 Plan. [E.C. 48980, 60850] Parents will receive notice of the exam date, requirements for passing and information concerning the consequences of not passing the exam.
