Superintendent's Message

Welcome back from our holiday winter break.  This year will surely bring new opportunities, strong teaching and learning, and student and staff recognitions as does every new year in the Elk Grove Unified School District.   We continue to advance our mission of providing a learning community that supports all students in realizing their greatest potential.

This year will also bring challenges.  We are all aware of the financial volatility that continues with the state’s economy and its subsequent impact on our district and community.  The Governor’s release of his January budget will provide new details, which we will use to build a state-mandated three-year budget.  While we can hope that things will look brighter for public education, all indications point to another difficult year for the state’s and school districts’ budgets.

There is no question that the fiscal implications will loom large for Elk Grove Unified and all school districts across the state. Our Board of Education and administration will continue to advocate for adequate funding of public education, while recognizing the reality of a state struggling with an economic crisis.

Unquestionably, the Elk Grove Unified School District will continue to explore ideas and options in order to use our resources differently.   Many of these discussions are already underway.   For example, we are on a fast track for getting an online program up and running to assist our credit deficient students. We hope this new program will help support our students during a time when we have had to eliminate summer school due to budget cuts.

In addition, we continue to look at cost-savings and the most effective use of one-time dollars.   We have launched an energy management program to encourage everyone to use our energy resources wisely. Likewise, we continue to look for ways to cut costs such as paper and copying.

Through this financial crisis we have worked to strengthen existing partnerships with community organizations and businesses.  We have also sought out new partnerships to assist us in supporting programs and services.  One newly emerging partnership is with SAS Curriculum Pathways, a free electronic learning tool that provides standards-based support for teachers and students in the core academic disciplines of English, mathematics, social studies, science and Spanish for grades 8-12.  We hope to launch this new resource for teachers and students in the coming weeks.

Exploring new technologies and resources is just one way that we are being creative in this new economic climate.  We encourage staff, students and parents to provide ideas and input for savings through our online Budget Watch suggestion box. We will keep you updated on the online budget page through regular postings.

In the meantime, we will remain committed to providing the best education possible for the children living in our community.
