No Excuses – Go to School Attendance Campaign returns for third year

For the third year in a row, students from across the district demonstrated their artistic talents through the No Excuses – Go to School Poster Contest.  The No Excuses – Go to School Poster Contests asks students to illustrate 12 rhymes describing the importance of going to school – every day.  The illustrated rhymes will be printed as posters to promote strong attendance.

The winners of the 2008/2009 No Excuses – Go to School Poster Contest will be recognized at the January 6, 2009, EGUSD Board of Education meeting.  The winning students and their posters are listed below:

Consistent school attendance is an important factor in academic success. Students with regular attendance are often more engaged in school and fair better academically. Attendance is also important for the school district. Every day that a student is absent from school, the district loses $36 per in state funding.

The campaign consists of a number of events and contests. Elementary, middle and high school students with perfect attendance for a calendar month are eligible to receive recognition through the district’s incentive program. Each month, one student with perfect attendance at each campus throughout Elk Grove Unified is randomly chosen to receive a prize.  These prizes are donated by local businesses.

At the elementary school level, students at each elementary school in the district have the chance to win a new bicycle and helmet at the end of the school year.  Each month a student has perfect attendance, they earn one entry in the drawing for the bike at the end of the school year.  The more entries they earn, the more chances they have to win the bicycle and helmet.  Kaiser Permanente is the sponsor of the bike giveaway.

For the third year in a row, graduating high school seniors have a special incentive to encourage consistent school attendance. The Elk Grove Auto Mall is sponsoring the 2008/2009 Graduating Seniors Attendance Drive. The Elk Grove Auto Mall has graciously donated $20,000 towards the purchase of a vehicle from one of their dealerships for a graduating senior with at least one month of perfect attendance. Each month, graduating seniors at all EGUSD high schools have the opportunity to earn one entry for an end-of-the-year drawing for the $20,000 grand prize.
